Functional Ceramics Made With Precision and Care

DM Pottery is a Sydney-based ceramics studio focused on producing functional, small-batch pottery. Each piece is hand-thrown or slab-built (or a combination of both) by Denise McDonald, whose background in landscape architecture and formal ceramic training informs a practical, design-minded approach.

The work is highly functional but also very decorative. Special pieces that can be used every day. With an emphasis on quality materials, small-run production, and practical usability, DM Pottery appeals to those who value well-made, durable objects with a personal touch and sometimes, extra florish.

Pieces are available online as well as at artisan markets and selected galleries and stores. Denise also takes on custom commissions and shares her process through workshops and demonstrations.

STudio Background

From Landscape Architecture to a Working Pottery Studio

DM Pottery was founded by Denise McDonald, whose background in landscape architecture naturally led to an interest in form, function, and the natural world. After taking her first pottery class, that spark turned into formal training, a diploma in ceramics, and a traineeship at Dartington Pottery in the UK.

Since returning to Sydney in 2009, Denise has built DM Pottery as a practice focused on understanding materials, strong technique, and straightforward design. Her pieces are made to be used regularly—dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and suitable for both home and hospitality settings.

Built steadily over time, the studio now holds a consistent place in Australia’s ceramic community.
